The acne continued well into my late 20s so I continued to take regular low-dose antibiotics for years. Little did I know that this kind of long term antibiotic use is incredibly damaging to the gut and the friendly microbes that live there.
On top of this, I was working my butt off as a lawyer in a law firm, juggling lots of stress and being careless about what I ate. To make matters worse, my way of dealing with the stress was to go out at weekends drinking and partying hard to blow off steam.
One day I was made redundant from my law firm, which turned out to be one of the best things ever. I took the opportunity to go travelling and see the world, but this is where things got even worse for my poor gut.
Travelling down through South America into Bolivia, I accidentally ate some bad chicken and contracted salmonella. I was destroyed for weeks and after yet more antibiotics my digestive system was in ruins.
I vividly remember one day in Bolivia when it came to a head. I had skipped breakfast in order to take my girlfriend to her early-morning doctor’s appointment. By the time we got back to the house mid-morning, I was bent over double with crippling stomach pain. I had to lie on the ground with my knees pulled to my chest for an hour before I could start functioning again.
I decided enough was enough. For too long I’d ignored my chronic diarrhea, just hoping it would go away, and I finally had to admit to myself that something was fundamentally wrong. When I got back to the UK, I went to my doctor and he ran a load of blood tests. All the results said I was fine so he sent me away, but I knew I wasn’t fine at all.
I resolved to do whatever it took to get better. I read tons of nutrition books and blogs hunting for answers. I finally discovered and followed several dietary systems which opened up the way for me to get better.
Now that my gut is restored to its rightful happy and healthy state, I am free of the chronic diarrhea and food intolerances.
I can now eat pretty much anything I like without ill-effect, although I select food carefully to optimize my health, knowing what I do now. My body gets the best fuel that it possibly can, and I am able to devote as much time and energy as I want to other areas of my life.
My immune system is now strong, I’m able to fend off coughs and colds easily and am no longer reliant on antibiotics. The hay fever that plagued me for years has gone. My skin issues have all cleared up.
I have way more energy now than I did when my gut was broken. I absolutely love going to the gym as I am continually gaining strength, putting on muscle and getting fitter.
Since fixing my gut I’ve also found very easy to get to my ideal bodyweight and stay there with very little effort.
Some of my friends moan about getting old but as I move into my mid-40’s I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in my life.
